In the principal's office of a primary school in nowhere town. He asked"Well, what d'ya think?" "Are you gonna take it?" I jest stared at him blankly. "Lemme be frank with you. I'm on my own right now." he carried on "I need some backup badly. I know that the whole world is looking at me and waiting for my moves. B'coz everyone thinks this is a big joke, but not for me." He beamed "I gotta show those bastards out there that I could do a lot more than what they think I'm capable of." I jest didn't have any ideas what to say. I just got kicked out of my old job in June teaching English at one of those English schools in town. The money was quite decent until I got a hunch that I would become a liability not an asset anymore. The time came, no matter how prepared I was I still got pissed off. I was one of those who started that school nine years ago but they still ditched me. Or jest b'coz I wasn't Brit or Yankee enough. Oh, what the heck! I couldn't change what had happened, could I? Anyway I needed to get a job to keep my family afloat.
"I know that you're gonna earn much less but you're gonna make it. Jest hang in there with me." He looked at me as if he could read my mind. I wasn't sure if the money he offered could cover my monthly expenses. "Oh, come on! Pull yourself together." I was startled when I heard that voice. Not again! Mr. Conscience was always there when I tried to do something out of my character. "Let's face it! It's your destiny and you can't run away from it." His voice was roaring in my heart. "What? Are you worried that you're not gonna be able to feed your family? You are not the Almighty. You are just a MORTAL. Always keep that in mind! You kneel down five times a day, don't you? I nodded. "D'ya remember the verses you always recite from the Holy Koran. Recite it to me! He commanded me. "But..." I tried to not to do what he told me. "No but...." He replied curtly "Recite it and tell me what it says." So I recited the verses silently.
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Universe.
The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
King of the Day of Judgment.
You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help.
Guide us to the straight way.
The way of those whom you have blessed, not of those who have deserved anger, nor of those who stray.
"Well, Don't you ever know that you are equipped with the most powerful spell in the universe to sort things out." Never cease to recite it! It will help you to get through."
"Yes, Pak. I will take it and how soon are we gonna start?" I couldn't help saying it. From that day I was determined to spend a stage of my life serving my community in the field of primary education in nowhere town and also sharing my views with my colleagues around this country.
